At Yorkshire Stone Craft Ltd we understand how important creating the perfect memorial can be, after all a memorial headstone is not merely a marker erected over a grave to remind us of the name of the deceased, it is a lasting symbol of remembrance to someone dearly loved. It is therefore extremely important that its design should be carefully chosen.

A memorial needs to be of a material which will withstand all kinds of weather, take a permanent carved inscription and harmonise with the surroundings, it should also weather attractively. Centuries have shown that Yorkshire stone has all these qualities. Yorkshire stone is a durable material, memorials made from it usually have a fine-rubbed, smooth surface and come in a range of distinctive hues of buff through to grey. All sandstones absorb water and this property means that lichens quickly cover the surface of the stone, giving it a natural ‘weathered’ appearance. This feature is particularly attractive to Church authorities who often like memorials to blend in with the character of the older memorials in the churchyard and indeed the Church buildings.
